Today (9 September) DVSA have published the statistics for driving test waiting times in August on GOV.UK.

There are some really positive trends in this month’s statistics:

-The driving test pass rate is at its highest level since May 2021

-DVSA conducted a record number of driving tests in August 2026, higher than any other August on record

-Driving test waiting times are continuing to reduce

Although there is still much more work to be done, these stats are a positive move forward.

DVSA know that providing more tests is one of the key ways they can help reduce waiting times and they are continuing to do this month after month.

Over the past 12 months, they’ve conducted more than 2.13 million driving tests, the highest rolling 12-month figure on record.

Alongside the pass rate remaining above 50%, DVSA are making real headway to bring down waiting times.

This is a real testament for the hard work and commitment you and your pupils are putting in to be test ready. Thank you for making sure your pupils are taking their test at the right time.

Tests booked and taken within 7 weeks

As part of our commitment to being more open with you, they're expanding what they publish. Alongside the existing set of waiting times data, they're now publishing availability data which shows the percentage of tests taken within 7-week brackets at national, regional and driving test centre levels.

This includes how many learners are waiting less than 7 weeks between booking and taking their test and how many are waiting more than 24 weeks.

By publishing more detailed information at national, regional and driving test centre level, they're making it easier to understand where pressure points remain, where improvements are being made and where further action is needed.

DVSA know that better data on its own does not reduce waiting times. However, what it does do is help us target the right interventions in the right places.
